A Story of CPAP Success: Eduardo’s Journey
CPAP compliance can be challenging, especially for younger patients, but success is possible with the right approach and support. I recently came across a heartwarming testimonial from Audrey Chikalla, a respiratory therapist at UC Davis, who shared the story of Eduardo and his journey to improve CPAP usage.
Eduardo had been struggling with CPAP compliance for over a year. His mom and the clinic team had tried adjusting settings, changing masks, and encouraging him, but progress was minimal. Eduardo often took off the mask unconsciously after just a few hours, and some nights he refused to wear it at all, despite his mom’s reminders. The struggle to improve his CPAP adherence had created tension between Eduardo and his mom, which was noticeable during clinic visits.
After a year of little progress, Audrey and the clinic team decided to try a different approach: they made a deal with Eduardo. If he could consistently wear his CPAP on school nights, he could take the weekends off. If he didn’t, he’d owe extra CPAP time on the weekends. To sweeten the deal, his mom agreed to reward CPAP compliance with earned gaming time.
This new strategy turned things around. When Eduardo returned to the clinic a month later, he proudly announced that he had been wearing his CPAP every night. Even more remarkable was the shift in the atmosphere; the tension that once filled the room was replaced with a newfound sense of ease. His mom confirmed his progress with a smile and a nod, and the clinic team worked on a plan to help him stay on track over the summer.
Eduardo's story is a great example of how a personalized, motivational approach can make all the difference in CPAP therapy. Special thanks to Audrey Chikalla and the team at UC Davis for sharing this inspiring journey. It reminds us that small adjustments in approach, and a little creativity, can lead to big changes in patient outcomes.
